Giving back some more

Jul 7th, 2020

Back in February 2018, we joined 1% for the Planet as a business member, pledging to give 1% of our revenue to select environmental projects. Since then, we've donated over $20,000 to both Humane Society International and WIRES Australia, incredible organisations making a real difference in their respective areas.

Joining 1% for the Planet was a significant moment for our small company and one I've been proud of every day since. It enabled us to donate responsibly and transparently for years, while encouraging other tech and e-commerce businesses to consider doing the same.

But now as we enter the second half of 2020, I feel that we as a company have the resources, time, and knowledge to donate more directly to certain causes close to our heart. Additionally, since we are a small company and our annual donations are not in the millions (but rather tens of thousands), it's important that for every dollar we donate, it's used as effectively as possible.

As such, we'll continue to donate 1% of our revenue each year, but no longer through 1% for the Planet.

GiveWell is an organisation specifically focused on helping people make more informed donations. Their work is phenomenal and incredibly detailed - I highly recommend reading about how they work and their most recommended charities.

Based on GiveWell's research, we decided to start by donating to the Against Malaria Foundation, an organisation doing crucial work protecting vulnerable communities around the world from malaria by distributing protective nets. I was also blown away by how transparent Against Malaria is - you can even view real-time donation statistics on their website.

Against Malaria Against Malaria

My hope and expectation is that over the next several years we will be able to directly donate over $100,000 to Against Malaria and other impactful organisations.

To all current, past, and future Metorik customers, thank you for enabling us to give back in this way. We'll continue to share progress as we work towards our goal and the impact it has.
